Albion 36 – Birmingham Moseley 12

A sparkling Putt drives Plymouth to maiden victory Albion 36 – Moseley 12 Entering their sixth fixture of the National League One campaign, it would have taken a brave Albion supporter to predict a home side win. Visitors to The Brickfields, Birmingham Moseley, had four wins on the log to Albion’s zero and boasted a strong team including former Premiership star Ashley Johnson in their XV. Fortunately for the Ocean City faithful, Damian Welch’s team had not read the script and took the honours with a convincing 34-12 win. After a literal mauling at Cinderford last week, Albion took to...

Cinderford 36 – Albion 12

Into the second round of his world title fight this weekend, Tyson Fury was on the canvas for the second time. Having received not one but two clean blows within the space of three minutes from the ‘Bronze Bomber ’Deontay Wilder, he was in uncharted water. No other heavyweight had come back from this place as Wilders 41 knockouts testified! This is not too far from the storm Plymouth Albion are weathering at the moment. Played five lost five with just two bonus points to show is not what even the most pessimistic supporters’ prediction for the seasons opening stanza...

Building a team to be proud of but it will take time.

A 38-27 reversal away from home to Sale FC was not the result Albion wanted, especially after a 250-mile sojourn to the industrial north. Going four games without a win is certainly not where we had planned to be, but in defeat and the bigger picture, there were loads of positives to draw from the game last Saturday. Looking back to our pre-season everything was going well. A sense of optimism and excitement was in the air. Approaching the return to competitive rugby in Plymouth after the 18-month Covid shut down, Albion’s mood was good. Our coaching team were bedding...

RFU Chief Executive visits Albion!

The Chief executive of the RFU, Bill Sweeney, was a guest of the club at the game last weekend against Rams. After what had been a fractious period for the club, the visit allowed for plenty of conversations around the state of the game and the plans emanating from HQ. Speaking of his visit Bill said “it was a very productive visit to the Albion and a pleasure to meet Dave, Max, Vince and Chris, and listen to their plans for the growth of the club after a difficult and challenging period. Without exception, you always learn more from a...

Sale FC 38 – Albion 27

John F Kennedy spoke in a famous address about the difficulty of taking the USA to the moon. He stated that making the journey to outer space, along with other scientific endeavours, were choices his administration were undertaking “not because they are easy, but because they are hard. Because that goal will serve to organise and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.” After the result on Saturday at Heywood Road,...

Albion 19 – Rams 26

It is often that through adversity things can start to come together and, for Plymouth Albion that certainly was the case on Saturday. Sitting bottom of the National League One table, in the midst of an injury crisis and facing a rampant Rams side (who were yet to drop a point), even the staunchest fan would have feared the worst!   Things were made considerably tougher in the build-up to the game with Robbie weeks pulling up following a hamstring tweak on Thursday night, and Henry Clement succumbed to sickness the morning of the game. With such short notice, Albion...

Bishops Stortford v Albion

Bishops Stortford 32 – Albion 19 Charles Dickens famously wrote the novel ‘A tale of two cities’ in 1859 and, a little over 150 years later, Plymouth Albion performed a game of rugby that could be called ‘a tale of two halves’! Leading 19-3 at the break, all looked rosy for coach Damian Welch’s charges following tries from Alex Ducker and Jake Clemson (along with three penalties from the trusty boot of Tom Putt). Sadly, that was all the blows the Ocean Cities finest would land as their opponents scored 29 unanswered points to take a bonus-point win. Lining up...
