ROYAL MARINES ANNOUNCE MAJOR SUMMER CELEBRATION IN PLYMOUTH TO MARK 350TH ANNIVERSARY

The Royal Marines have today announced details of a four night visual and musical extravaganza this July to mark the 350th anniversary of their formation. The RM350 South West Proms will be hosted by Plymouth Albion Rugby Football Club (RFC) from Wednesday 16th to Saturday 19th July. The event agreement has been signed by both organisations today and tickets for the high profile public event are now on sale.

RM350 South West Proms is one of the main events to be held in the UK to mark the 350th anniversary and is the Royal Marines’ flagship celebration in the South West to honour the long and proud relationship they have with Plymouth. It is expected to attract more than 18,000 spectators across the four nights, bringing together the local, regional and national community alongside the Royal Marines for a spectacular and unique occasion.

With military precision and flair, the celebration will capture the sense of occasion the Royal Marines are renowned for. The stadium will be abuzz with music and parades courtesy of over a hundred world class performers. Her Majesty’s Band of the Royal Marines will lead each night’s proceedings, with support from local bands and impressive military displays from the Commando Recruiting Team. Looking to the sky, it is hoped there will be a dramatic Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm historical flypast and a firework display.

It will be a ticket only event, with thousands of tickets now on sale and available to the public. Pricing has been purposefully set to make the occasion as accessible to the local community as possible, with a 25% discount being given to all Plymouth residents and Royal Marines, serving and retired.

Plymouth Albion RFC has pledged the ground for free to the Royal Marines, beyond the running costs, which means all proceeds from the event will go to charity. The Royal Navy and Royal Marine Charity and Plymouth Drake Foundation are the chosen recipients.

Major General David Hook of the Royal Marines commented: “This year is a major milestone for the Royal Marines and we look forward to marking the occasion in the city. Plymouth is the spiritual and geographical centre of gravity for the Royal Marines and we see this event as a chance to commemorate the strong links we have with the city and local community. Plymouth Albion RFC has pledged generous support for RM350 South West Proms and we have no doubt July’s celebrations will be breathtaking, so we urge people to get involved.”

Louise Uncles, Marketing and Sales Director PARFC, and Maurice West, Board member PARFC, added: “We believe this will be both an extraordinary and unprecedented event. The celebration is fitting for the Royal Marines’ milestone. Plymouth Albion RFC is at the heart of the local community, having hosted a mass of Military events here, it was fitting that we were selected to host. It gives Plymouth Albion immense pleasure that this prestigious event will open their doors to people from the local community and beyond.”
