Redruth 3 Plymouth Albion 89
By Paddy Marsh at The Recreation Ground
Plymouth Albion made it three from three pre season wins when they outclassed a plucky Redruth side in perfect playing conditions at the Recreation Ground.
Albion ran in a total of 13 tries, all scored by the backs, with only the last score going unconverted.
Leading the way for Albion was left wing Jamie Davies who ran in a hat trick and there were a brace of tries for Chris Elder, Dan Mugford, Tom Bowen and replacements Lewis Warner and Rob Coote.
After Worcester pulled out Friday nights match at Brickfields Albion head coach James Shanahan used the visit to Cornwall to field a very strong side.
Shanahan, who came on as a replacement in the second half, reflecting on the performance said, “I would like to thank Redruth who were expecting us to send down a different side. It was a good physical run out for us and Redruth to their credit never gave up.
“I was pleased with the performance and we had pace in the backs which punished Redruth’s mistakes.
“We scored some good tries with some good interlinking. The goal kicking was very good and we have three very good kickers in our squad, which will be important as the season progresses.”
Playing with the wind behind them Albion opened the scoring with a try after just 82 seconds.
Scrum half Paul Rowley ran a kickable penalty and a well timed pass from centre Pale Nonu put fly half Mugford though for a try he converted with a good kick from wide out.
Redruth responded well and full back Ashley Hosking kicked a 25 metre penalty after Albion were penalised for not releasing.
Albion quickly hit back with a try from right wing Bowen, who was put over in Hellfire Corner by Rowley.
Mugford again added the extras with a another well judged kick.
Try number three came in the 15th minute and was scored under the posts by full back Elder, with Mugford adding the simple conversion.
Mid way through the first half a long miss pass gave left wing Jamie Davies the space the go over in the corner for his first try in Albion colours.
Mugford added the conversion with an excellent kick from the touchline.
A 75 metre handling move ended with Mugford getting his second try to which he added the extras.
A mistake by Redruth in Albion’s 22 gave the visitors the chance to counter attack and a flowing move ended with Davies getting his second try which Mugford converted.
Good work in the tight by lock Ien Ascroft-Leigh followed by a well timed pass put Bowen over for his second, and Mugford maintained his 100% kicking record with the conversion which sent Albion into the interval leading 49-3.
Both sides made replacements at the break with Redruth bringing on former Albion man Rhodri McAtee.
Albion’s first try of the second half was scored by replacement scrum half Rob Coote, who sold a dummy and went over under the posts with Mugford converting.
Albion brought on six more replacements and shortly afterwards Davies completed his hat trick.
Elder taking over the kicking duties converted.
Replacement wing Lewis Warner took the try tally into double figures with Elder adding the fine conversion from wide out.
Shortly afterwards Davies put Elder, now playing in the centre, over for his second try which he easily converted.
Coote became the fifth Albion player to score two tries when he went over from a close range scrum with Elder converting.
Albion’s 13th and final try was scored by Warner, a score which became the first not to be converted.
Redruth battled to the end and tested Albion’s defence with a series of close range drives but the visitors defence held firm.
Next up for Albion is Friday nights visit to Kingsholm to take on Premiership outfit Gloucester.
