Welcome Jake Clemson

Plymouth Albion is excited to finally announce the signing of Jake Clemson from Cornish Pirates. The 21-year-old has signed a one-year deal with Albion making him the second first-team addition of the summer! Born in the Royal Naval Hospital, Gibraltar, at a time when his father was based there, Jake was later educated at St. Ives Secondary School and Penwith College. The 6’ 6” (1.98m) Jake first played rugby at the age of six for St. Ives, where he continued to represent the club through the age groups and into the Colts, who he captained. Throughout this period he very...

Update Twelve from MD Max Venables

Before I get into this week’s musings, I have a very real STOP PRESS moment with another very exciting signing at Albion! Hot on the heels of Ospreys and Wales 7’s Phil Jones, we’re over the moon announce imposing second row/back row Jake Clemson from Cornish Pirates. Standing at six feet six inches and tipping the scales at over seventeen stones he will add some serious grunt to our already formidable pack. And now, the musings… At last! HM Government is progressively releasing the most serious restrictions of lockdown, promoting the Rugby Football Union to unveil its plan for the...

Update Eleven from MD Max Venables

Sitting in Albion’s hot seat I can readily identify with the words of Garry Ryan Blair, an illustrious American author and motivational guru, who famously said; “You cannot afford to wait for perfect conditions. Goal setting is often a matter of balancing timing against available resources. Opportunities are easily lost while waiting for perfect conditions.” Well now; waiting is something that has been forced on us all, by the COVID 19 Lockdown. Conditions are indeed a long way short of perfect, but that has not stopped us setting goals and positioning Plymouth Albion to take advantage of the opportunities as...

Plymouth Albion is thrilled to announce the signing of young Welshman Phil Jones. The Fly-half/Full back has signed a one-year deal after stints at Ospreys and Swansea RFC. The Gower native told us all about his Rugby education and the deciding factor behind his decision. “I’ve just finished university and I found myself at a natural crossroad. The opportunity came up to come to Plymouth and be a part of the journey over the next few years which is really exciting for me! It was a tough decision after playing all of my senior Rugby at Swansea RFC and I...

Update Ten from MD Max Venables

Three months of ‘lockdown’ continue to ease with the opening of high street shops this week and a progressive return to social mixing, albeit at a distance of 2 metres. Premiership rugby squads have been called back to training with the season expected to resume in July. Bottom line, our own much-anticipated return to playing rugby at Brickfields is slowly coming ever closer; the ‘New Normal’ we hear about is beginning to dawn. The good news continues, as I am delighted to announce Plymouth Albion and VX-3 have agreed to a new 3-year kit deal. VX-3 is a fresh new...

Update Nine from MD Max Venables

Apologies for being a bit late this week, I am trying my best to ensure we get the news out at the same time but we’ve had an especially busy week, things are beginning to pick up pace as we start to see players return to training (in small, distanced groups), PPE orders arrive and focus turn to the 20/21 season preparation. However, before that, there is the small matter of the end of season awards!!! The Emmys, it is not, neither is it the Brits or BAFTA’s, but to us here at Plymouth Albion, it is as close to...

Higgins Signs for Jersey Reds

Prop Jack Higgins will be leaving Albion after signing a contract with Championship side Jersey Reds. Jack very kindly spoke to us about his decision to leave… “For next season I’ve signed with Jersey Reds in the Championship. I got a message from my agent out of the blue saying they want a chat. I got good positive vibes from them and it seemed like a good opportunity for me. It is one of those things where if you’re set a challenge, rise to it. I don’t want to leave any stone unturned”. On what he has gained from his...

Update Eight from MD Max Venables

Another week of ‘Lockdown’ under our belt and the first signs of Coronavirus easing are beginning to appear. The government are allowing Premiership Football and Horse racing to resume, although events will take place behind closed doors with spectators confined to their armchairs in front of the TV. No mention yet of rugby returning, but that day must surely be getting closer. Ex American president Barack Obama said; “If you’re walking down the right path and you’re willing to keep walking, eventually you’ll make progress.” A sentiment we recognise well here at Brickfields. The work continues as we firmly believe...

Update Seven from MD Max Venables

It would be remiss of me to open this briefing with anything less than another Big ‘Thank You’ to the Albion 2020 Heroes, who donated the magnificent sum of £31,042. In just 28 days 215 people stepped up to the plate supporting our club with their donation to our cause. Rugby is a physical game of high impact contact, collisions and raw power. To the uninitiated, it might appear that genuine animosity and acrimony exist between contesting teams. Nothing, however, is further from the truth. The respect, fellowship and lifelong friendships that grow between opposing players and fans is unique...
