Update Seven from MD Max Venables

It would be remiss of me to open this briefing with anything less than another Big ‘Thank You’ to the Albion 2020 Heroes, who donated the magnificent sum of £31,042. In just 28 days 215 people stepped up to the plate supporting our club with their donation to our cause. Rugby is a physical game of high impact contact, collisions and raw power. To the uninitiated, it might appear that genuine animosity and acrimony exist between contesting teams. Nothing, however, is further from the truth. The respect, fellowship and lifelong friendships that grow between opposing players and fans is unique...

Update Six from MD Max Venables

I suspect you will all know by now that Ex Chiefs and Cardiff Blues star, Damian Welch is joining us at Brickfields. We wanted a big name to take the helm of playing issues and they do not come much bigger than 6’6’’ Damian. Big in both stature and character, Damian is a great fit for us at Brickfields. He knows the game, knows the region and is a senior-level coach keen to make his mark at an elite level club.   The face of rugby is evolving at a pace and post coronavirus we will all be faced with...

Damian Welch to be Appointed as Albion Head Coach

Damian Welch to be appointed as Albion Head Coach. The former Cardiff Blue and Exeter Chiefs player has signed a two-year deal with the option of an extension. ‘I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in. From the moment I spoke to Max (Venables) about what the club saw as there way forward I think it made me more desperate to get the job. My interest has been peaked ever since that moment. I’m really looking forward to getting down there and getting stuck in. I’ve heard good things about the fans, Max has explained the whole Crowd Funder initiative...

The Albion Ball Boys Have Their Say!

By Kevin Westlake. As the rugby season has come to an official close, we thought we would have a chat with some of our ball-boys. You will see this dedicated band of boys and girls attending every home match. Sometimes, the sun shines upon Brickfields, but most of the time, they work tirelessly in the blustery wind and driving rain to ensure the game continues without delay. They are the unsung heroes of a matchday, along with the leader of the pack, Dave Stone. Their jobs include ensuring the players have their practice balls returned during the warm-up, making sure...

Update Five from MD Max Venables

A big thank you to fans, sponsors and friends who have supported our Albion 2020 Heroes funding initiative. Donations pledged to date have topped £22,000 and we still have a few days to go to hit our target. Your support is hugely encouraging to all in our Brickfield HQ where work continues at a pace. Thank you one and all.   Coronavirus confusion continues to reign throughout the land, despite Boris enthusiastically encouraging us to remain ‘alert,’ work from home if we can, but return to our place of employment if we need to. Scotland, Wales and Ireland...

Update Four From MD Max Venables

Michael Jordon came from rags to riches following an illustrious basketball career. “You never know what you can accomplish if you try, “said Michael. Fifteen seasons in the NBA, a record six Championships with Chicago Bulls and a multi-million-dollar fortune, confirm that his propensity to ‘try and try again ‘paid huge dividends. As a boy, Michael played second fiddle to his brother and many of his peers. He was a ‘prodigious trier’ who never gave up committing his all to relentless practice, training and skill development. Michael’s efforts earned an athletics scholarship to the University of North Carolina, where his...

Update Three from MD Max Venables

No less a luminary than American President Ronald Regan said; “There are no constraints on the human mind, no walls around the human spirit, no barriers to our progress except those we ourselves erect.” Then again Regan never experienced Coronavirus. I am however pleased to report that we have made significant progress here at the heart of Plymouth Albion. First up I am happy to announce the launch of our ‘Albion 2020 Heroes’ Crowd Funding opportunity later this month. The initiative gives fans, sponsors and a wider audience of community supporters the opportunity to step up to the plate and...

Update Two From MD Max Venables

You can’t take a pill for experience’, or so the saying goes. I think it fair to say that my learning curve has been near-vertical since I took the helm at Brickfields. Experience is invariably a good thing, but I feel sure we could all do without the restrictions of this year’s lockdown Easter. Nevertheless, Easter signals winter coming to an end with the sunny blue skies of summer soon to be with us. In many ways, Albion is similarly positioned with the harsh realities that befell our much-anticipated end of season celebrations prematurely halted in their tracks. Coronavirus certainly...
