Albion poised to take on Chinnor

Trailing much fancied Rosslyn Park 8-11 in front of 2000 fans with nigh on 40 minutes on the clock, the first half of the 21/22 season had started quite well for Plymouth Albion. With a man in the sin bin Harry Ellis, the Rosslyn Park openside, sprinted to the touchline to kick the ball away and avoid a further Albion attack. Such was the excitement at the beginning of the National One season, not many would have predicted what was to come! Sadly, the visitors that day stretched ahead, and Albion found themselves on the wrong end of the result....

Albion clinch vital point in tale of two halves

It is often said that the league table doesn’t lie and, with just over half the game gone at Paton Field, there wouldn’t be many rugby pundits who would disagree. Following their 300-mile trip from Devon to Cheshire, Albion seemingly hadn’t gotten off the bus and top of the table Caldy were 40-0 up. To their credit, the hosts were on fine form and a depleted Albion side were dogged but unfortunate in their endeavour. Indeed, the opening exchange of the game was all Albion as the Ocean Cities’ finest started by testing the northerner’s defence. Caldy (the surprise package...

Albion face a stern challenge at Caldy

The Ocean Cities’ finest face a stern challenge this week with 612-mile round trip to Wirral based Caldy RFC. On the back of the stellar last-minute win over Blackheath, the visit to the league leaders will provide something of a ‘free hit’ for Albion. Not many would have expected this to be the case at the beginning of the season but former Harlequins hooker Matty Cairns has revolutionised the northern club. Spearheaded by the Dickinson brothers up front, Caldy have been the surprise package of the National Division this term and fully warrant their heady position. With veteran England 7’s...

Albion 24 – Blackheath 22

Match report by Rob Kershaw  / Photography by David Cunningham A remarkable late surge from Plymouth Albion and a last-minute try from replacement Harry Wilkinson saw them snatch a dramatic victory from the hands of Blackheath in front of a delighted Brickfields crowd. The crucial win leaves Albion 13th in the National League One table, just one point and a place below their beaten visitors and gives them a seven-point cushion over Leeds Tykes. Unlike two weeks ago and indeed last week in Birmingham when the game was called off as a legacy of Storm Eunice, the weather was impeccable...

Blackheath is a must-win for Albion!

Following last weekend’s postponement at Moseley, Albion face the visit of the oldest rugby club in the world this weekend with London based Blackheath heading to the Brickfields. For the second time this season this is undoubtedly a ‘must win’ game for the Ocean Cities finest. On the first occasion, against Leeds, they scored a resounding bonus point win and the stage is certainly set for a colossal battle Like Albion, Blackheath have not had the most auspicious season to date and haven’t won a game since an impressive victory over Rams on the 4th of December. Indeed, last weekend...

Albion face an intriguing Moseley trip…

After a frustrating loss in difficult conditions at home to fourth place Cinderford, Plymouth Albion make the relatively short trip (for National League One standards!) to Birmingham Moseley this weekend. Four points further up the table but having played one game more than Albion, this is something of a big game for the ocean cities finest as they look to get breathing space from the wrong end of the table. Having defeated the Midlander’s in a convincing 34-12 bonus point win earlier in the season, Albion will certainly fancy their chances at Billesley Common. With minimal changes to the team,...

Albion 13 – Cinderford 20

Match report by Rob Kershaw / Photography by David Cunningham   Plymouth Albion tasted defeat at home to Cinderford in National League One after a robust performance from the visitors turned out to be a little too much for a brave home side. Cinderford entered the afternoon fourth in the table, having taken 12 wins from their opening 18 fixtures, but just three had come away from home – so opportunity beckoned as Albion sought to avenge their defeat in the reverse fixture earlier in the season. The home side were on a high, having claimed a significant sixth victory...

Resurgent Albion face Cinderford challenge

Fresh from a bonus point win over Yorkshire powerhouse Leeds, Plymouth Albion have a tougher challenge this weekend with Gloucester based Cinderford. Having comfortably beaten Albion earlier in the season, this is a real acid test of the Ocean Cities finest as they look to continue a strong run at home. The team from the Forest of Dean took the Albion pack to task in their 36-12 victory back in October and boast former Albion stalwart George Porter as their star man. Indeed, it was Porter who caused Albion a world of trouble in the last fixture and there will...
