Update Three from MD Max Venables

No less a luminary than American President Ronald Regan said; “There are no constraints on the human mind, no walls around the human spirit, no barriers to our progress except those we ourselves erect.” Then again Regan never experienced Coronavirus. I am however pleased to report that we have made significant progress here at the heart of Plymouth Albion. First up I am happy to announce the launch of our ‘Albion 2020 Heroes’ Crowd Funding opportunity later this month. The initiative gives fans, sponsors and a wider audience of community supporters the opportunity to step up to the plate and...

Update Two From MD Max Venables

You can’t take a pill for experience’, or so the saying goes. I think it fair to say that my learning curve has been near-vertical since I took the helm at Brickfields. Experience is invariably a good thing, but I feel sure we could all do without the restrictions of this year’s lockdown Easter. Nevertheless, Easter signals winter coming to an end with the sunny blue skies of summer soon to be with us. In many ways, Albion is similarly positioned with the harsh realities that befell our much-anticipated end of season celebrations prematurely halted in their tracks. Coronavirus certainly...

Update from MD Max Venables

“We have certainly enjoyed many exciting days at Brickfields with the crowd on the edge of their seats as our players engaged in battles royal with some great teams from around the land. Indeed, we were looking forward to a thrilling climax to this current season with two hugely attractive home fixtures to round of a good year in the history of Plymouth Albion. Unfortunately, it was not to be as Coronavirus saw to that. What is for certain is that the current national lockdown will come to an end and normal service will eventually be resumed. For us at...

The Beacon Park Days: Part Four

By Kevin Westlake. As I grew older at Beacon Park, the weight of responsibility seemed to grow too, by the age of 6, I was a Ball-boy with the club, by the age of 14 I was helping the groundsman keep up with the arduous weekly routine of maintenance and preparation for the following Saturday. The groundsman at this point was a lovely fellow named Bob Dawe. Bob was a tiny man with a heart of gold. He always put 100% into ensuring the pitch was in tip-top condition and that the many broken fixtures and fittings remained in service....

The Beacon Park Days: Part Three

By Kevin Westlake. Do you wonder about the internal running of a rugby club? For example, who does what jobs? In this day and age, most tasks are conducted by grown adults with training and a degree of competence, but back when I was a child growing up at Plymouth Albion, the important jobs were given to kids. There was no such thing as a risk assessment or formal training. You were shown once and told to get on with it. The above facts lead me on to my next childhood story, one of danger, suspense and darkness throughout. For...

The Beacon Park Days: Part Two

By Kevin Westlake. For anyone who grew up in the 80s and 90s, family was everything. Life was no different at Plymouth Albion. I was lucky enough to have hundreds of “aunties and uncles”, who looked out for us whilst our parents were enjoying the clubhouse after a game. These men and women manned the huts, shops, kitchen and bars around the ground, which made getting away with mischief hard, but luckily, I mastered the art quickly. As mentioned previously, I have fond memories of growing up at Beacon Park. The club itself wasn’t particularly child friendly, but some of...

The Beacon Park Days: Part One

By Kevin Westlake. As a kid, I grew up in one of the best places in the world. It wasn’t Disneyland or Paignton Zoo, it wasn’t hot, or dry or even attractive. It was Beacon Park. Not the over-inflated housing area in the city, but the real Beacon Park. My fortress, my home and my sanctuary for the vast majority of my childhood. As an adult, I am constantly reminded of that childhood as I walk around the ground at Brickfields. Former players socialising, the historic memorabilia in the clubhouse and the fact that the management of Plymouth Albion is...

More Event Updates

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 Plymouth Albion have decided to postpone more of our events to ensure the minimization of gatherings as suggested by the government. This decision has been made with the public’s health being the priority. This includes our rugby camps at Albion on the 31st of March and 2nd of April. And our camp at West Buckland School on the 8th of April. And lastly, the Craig Dennis Charity match will also be postponed. We will provide updates once we have more clarity on the situation.

A Statement from David Venables

“First of all, I’d like to thank you on behalf of the family and Plymouth Albion for your loyalty and hard work during this difficult period. And although it hasn’t helped the club financially, having clear instruction from both the Government and the RFU at least allows us to know what we are dealing with. As you will be aware the RFU banned all rugby activity at 6:30pm on Monday until the 14th of April, and we will continue monitoring the situation. Obviously, we have £0 income until then as outside of rugby we are an events/hospitality business. We are...
