Darlington Mowden Park 25 – Albion 22

Gritty Albion take two points on the road Match report by Chris Bentley / Photography by Andy Hall  Taking one of the longest trips in domestic rugby an injury-ravaged Plymouth Albion only had 17 men listed to play. On our social channels, there were dissenting voices as the parlous state of the club was clear to see. Many would have expected a team with a flanker on the wing, number 8 in the centres along with 5 specialist front-rowers in the starting pack to have been on the tail end of a big loss. This was certainly not the case...

Gallant Albion face tough northern test!

Plymouth Albion face one of the longest journeys in domestic rugby union this weekend with the mammoth trip north to face Darlington Mowden Park. In another big fixture as part of their dramatic National League One run in, the game has added spice due to ongoing sparsity in the Albion squad. With only two players on the bench, Albion really are running on fumes as the season reaches an extraordinary climax. After a highly convincing bonus point win last weekend that saw opponents Tonbridge Juddians relegated, many would tip Albion to do the double this weekend against their northern rivals....

Albion 34 – Tonbridge Juddians 21

Match report by Rob Kershaw / Photography by David Cunningham An exceptional solo try from Ben Parsons helped Plymouth Albion to a huge victory over the Tonbridge Juddians on what could be a pivotal day for Albion’s season. The win lifts them level with Blackheath onto 48 points with a game in hand over them as they bid to escape the bottom three in National League 1. The tension could be cut with a knife ahead of kick-off; everyone knew what a win would mean, and as the game got underway in slightly cold, damp conditions, Albion made a strong...

The time is now for Plymouth Albion

With five games to play, the future of Plymouth Albion lies firmly in their own hands as they enter the final stanza of the National Division One league programme. With fixtures against all the teams around them, Albion has the chance to move up the table quickly and it starts this weekend against rock bottom Tonbridge Juddians. Over the last few weeks, a depleted Albion has shown courage and commitment in spades against higher ranked opposition, but they now face teams with similar league ranking. If they can continue to play at the same level (and with a tranche of...

Albion claim crucial bonus in twelve try thriller

Match report by Chris Bentley / Photography by David Cunningham A hugely spirited Plymouth Albion claimed what may be a vital bonus point away from home for the second week on the bounce at Volac Park on Saturday. Travelling with a depleted bench and stretched to their barest resources, the spirit from Damian Welch’s team shone through in what can certainly be seen as a moral victory against fourth placed Cambridge. On a bright and clear day, running rugby was going to be very much to the fore and that certainly proved to be the case in the to-and-fro match...

Stupple centre of attention in depleted Albion line-up

For the second week on the bounce, a depleted Plymouth Albion are on the road for a tough-looking National Division One Fixture. After the valiant losing bonus point at Moseley last week, Coach Damian Welch will be hopeful lightning can strike twice as they visit fourth place Cambridge at their Volac Park stronghold. The striking selection for the game is number 8 Herbie Stupple in the centres. The last time this happened, the Ocean Cities’ finest took a record away victory but only the most partisan supporter would think that likely. Injuries and call ups from parent clubs have left...

Moseley 45 – Albion 28

Match report by Chris Bentley / Photography by David Cunningham The relentless nature of National Division One caught up with Plymouth Albion on Saturday in a ding-dong battle at Billesley Common. Shorn of their dual-registered players from Exeter Chiefs and Cornish Pirates, a reduced squad of 18 players made the journey to the midlands to face mid-table Birmingham Moseley. Even missing a full bench there was optimism in the Albion rank that another double could be on the cards against the team they had dispatched 34-12 back in October. Indeed, after 10 minutes of the game, there wouldn’t be many...

Albion support new pancreatic cancer initiative

Albion support new Pancreatic cancer initiative Plymouth Albion are getting behind well renowned local surgeon Somaiah Arooai and Pancreatic Cancer Nurse Specialist, Claire Goulding, in their drive to help raise awareness of the early causes and treatment of Pancreatic cancer. 29 people are diagnosed with the condition every day and the survival rates have not improved since the late 1970’s. The inspirational Plymouth based medics are keen to change things and, with the help of their local rugby club, are driving a new initiative to get people in the Ocean City to become more aware of early symptoms. For the...

Plymouth Albion 12 – Chinnor 19

Match report by Rob Kershaw / Photography by David Cunningham A late Jamie Salter try was not enough to secure any more than a losing bonus point for Plymouth Albion as an underwhelming performance saw them lose at home for the seventh time this season in National League One. One try, one drop goal and three penalties secured the points during a tremendous afternoon for Chinnor, and a painful one for the hosts. Seventh-placed Chinnor had claimed four wins on the road this season with eight victories overall, although they fell to a tight defeat to Albion in Oxfordshire when...
