In form Albion look forward to Tykes Clash

Whisper it, but we might actually get a game this time. The Leeds bus rolled into Plymouth a couple of weeks before Christmas, but it might as well not have done. Fans of both sides were let down when the decision was made by the Leeds team captain 30 minutes before kick-off that the game was not going to be played, only for a Leeds training session to take place on the pitch after it was postponed. But there are no excuses this time, nowhere to run, and no hiding in what has recently become very much fortress Brickfields. Beaten...

Gritty Albion take big comeback win

Report by Chris Bentley / Photography by Peter Sheridan Charles Dickens once wrote ‘A Tale of two Cities’ and if he was at the Brickfields on Saturday he would not have needed to change much to describe the tale of two halves Plymouth Albion played! A first half of miserly defence was backed up with an imperious last 30 as the home team took another bonus point win to drive them firmly into the top half of the table in what was a great advert for National League rugby. In front of a season best 1385 fans, the scene was...

Albion return to Brickfields in search of a response

Match report by Chris Bentley / Photography by David Cunningham  Following an under-par performance last weekend, Albion return to fortress Brickfields for an intriguing battle with in-form Chinnor. Since the arrival of 50 cap England star Nick Easter as director of rugby, the Oxfordshire outfit have taken two handy wins that belie their lowly league position. Their 48-12 drubbing of promotion hopefuls Rosslyn Park on the 6th of January sent shockwaves around the league and this was followed by a handy away win at Moseley. With Albion showing very strong form at home (they’ve won 6 of 7 all with...

Capital punishment for Albion at Esher

Plymouth Albion were left with a solitary bonus point for scoring four tries after a tough 34-24 loss on the road to London outfit Esher. After a game full of heart and endeavour at fortress Brickfields last weekend, beating fifth-placed Cinderford, the travelling faithful expected Albion to make short work of the team they defeated 45-29 in the reverse fixture. Sadly that was not to be on a bitterly cold day in London. Prior to the game, all the talk had been about the return of wingers Alex Ducker and Kyle Speare, to add to the Albion arsenal. Indeed, it...

Albion in seventh heaven with big Cinderford win

Match report Rob Kershaw / Photography David Cunningham   Albion 17 Cinderford 10 A late try from Tom Putt secured four points for Albion against fifth-placed Cinderford at an electric Brickfields on Saturday afternoon. A competitive opening few minutes saw both sides ship penalties, but the visitors began to assert some early control, keeping the ball firmly in Albion’s half. Cinderford are famous for their forward play, boasting a front row with oodles of Premiership experience and commenced an all-out assault on Albion’s line. To a man, Albion commenced a valiant defensive effort, both legal and not so as penalties kept...

Match Preview – Albion v Cinderford

Match report Rob Kershaw / Photography David Cunningham   It’s a new year at Brickfields For the first time in 2023, it is time for Albion to take to the Brickfields as we face off against Cinderford. It was a tough beat against the men from Gloucestershire in September, as it was last week when we travelled to Manchester to face Sale. A tremendous first half comeback was eventually undone by the promotion favourites, who provided a display befitting of champions elect in National League One. However, last week’s cruel loss was far from a deviation from the positive path Ryan...

In memorial of a few good men

The Plymouth Albion family has lost a few good men over the past few weeks and we will be holding a minute’s silence before the game with Cinderford this week in memorial of our teammates.   Dr Brian Gurry Brian passed away over the Christmas Period. Born on the 28th of February 1939, he was selected as a 15- year- old for Brixham RFC 1st XV, as a Hooker, before going to Barts Hospital to train to become a Doctor. While there he represented Eastern Counties and played for Southend on Sea and Woodford RFC. After qualifying as a doctor,...

New year starts with narrow defeat at Sale

Match report by Rob Kershaw / Photography by David Cunningham  A phenomenal afternoon of Rugby saw Plymouth Albion push top of the table Sale all the way at Heywood Road on Saturday, but they ultimately fell to a 45-35 defeat. With Albion possibly ‘still on the bus’, a frantic opening 20 minutes saw Sale go 14 ahead through Josh Brown and Neville Edwards, with James Robins converting both scores. However, the Albion response was lightning. Tom Putt flew over twice to pull Ryan Lamb’s men back level, picking himself up both times to slot the conversions and give the crowd...

Albion return with a trip to Manchester

Report by Rob Kershaw / Photography by David Cunningham A very happy new year to all of our supporters, and it’s about to get even happier. National League Rugby is back! Following some much-needed time away it is time to get back into the swing of things, and we do so by heading up to Manchester on Saturday. We face Sale in our 14th game of the season, running back a fixture in which everything seemed to go against us during our defeat at Brickfields earlier in the campaign. A tough encounter saw the boys in white lose by three...
