Plymouth Albion v Sale FC, Saturday 17th September – K/O 3 PM
Report by Rob Kershaw
It has been a solid start to the new season for Albion, and this weekend, it is time for the Ocean City side to return to Brickfields Stadium for the first home game of the new season.
Two losing bonus points in Cambridge were followed by a superb win away at Taunton last weekend, and that was despite four of the 20 travelling players being stuck on the M5.
Unbelievable traffic also prevented a lot of our support from being there last time out, so a lot of you missed out on a cracker, but the noises on social media suggested that there was still a lot of positive energy being sent over from the road!
That brings us to this Saturday, which sees us come up against a Sale FC side which, firstly, will all be there in time for kick-off, and secondly, should help give the crowd an entertaining show.
The Manchester-based side have won both of their opening games of the new season, taking all five points in convincing performances against Leeds Tykes and Birmingham Mosely.
They won nine of their 14 away fixtures last campaign, and that helped them to a second-placed finish as they narrowly lost out on promotion by five points to Caldy.
The performances so far from the Plymouth boys will almost certainly have been enough to convince Damian Welch that they can go toe-to-toe with anyone in the division this campaign, though, and in front of what is always an energetic Brickfields faithful, Saturday afternoon should be a cracker.
Damian has made four changes to his side ahead of this weekend’s game, with Jack Oulton, George Mills and Phil Jones coming back in, while Dan Collier has recovered from a shoulder strain that kept him out of the win over Taunton last week.
Last season’s meetings:
Both games were hard fought between the sides last season; Sale took a 38-27 victory in Manchester, before narrowly overcoming the Albion at Brickfields 10-7.
From Sale, it’s a trip down the M56, then onto the M6, before arriving just south of Birmingham.
That will take you onto the Devon Expy, down towards Devonport in Plymouth.

It will be fantastic to welcome you all back to Brickfields on Saturday, so come down, have a drink, and enjoy a brilliant afternoon of Rugby.
