Plymouth Albion Ladies 10 vs Teddington Ladies 10

08th January 2017

With the start of the new year the South West London side ground out a 10-10 draw. The result is not the end of the Albion Ladies promotion aspirations. The hard work through the first half of the season ensured that Albion Ladies are still five points clear of their nearest rivals Bath Ladies II at the top of the Championship SW 2.

With the weather playing a factor and the pitch a mud bath, Albion Ladies started the game very well playing some of the best rugby they have ever played. However the pummelling of the Teddington defence, which stood up valiantly meant that Albion Ladies were unable to convert the pressure into a try.

After 21 mins and completely against the run of play Teddington broke away to score and make it 5-0 to the home side. With a yellow card against Teddington on 35 minutes, Caitin Short was able to add 3 points from the resulting penalty to bring the score to 5-3. The score looked to remain unchanged as the game headed to half time when on 40mins a penalty was reversed. The ball was sent wide and found Full Back Lilly Goddard, who used her speed to go under the posts for Albions first try. The try was converted successfully by Caitlin Short to make the halftime score 5-10 in favour of Albion Ladies.

After the match assistant coach Steve Luffman said “the players were a bit down about the draw, but the fact remains we are still unbeaten. What it’ss done is make our game against Bath Ladies this Sunday (22nd Jan) enormous – if they beat us and get a bonus point while they’re doing it, then they join us level at the top of the table. It’s brought the game into very sharp focus. We have been missing some of our key players and the good thing is they will be fit for the Bath game. That will make a big difference”.

The development team, the Albion Barracudas, have their second outing at home this season on Sunday 22nd January against Withycombe Ladies. KO 2pm (TBC). All support is welcomed and the clubhouse bar will be open.
