Plymouth Albion arrived at a Dillingham Park following 4 wins on the bounce in National League One and what started promising, ended in disappointment for Albion.
Previous games between the two clubs have always been close, with the first half panning out to look like a repeat, however, in the second half Ampthill prioved to be too much for Albion.
Albion’s intentions were clear right at the start and within 6 minutes Albion took the lead with a try from John kelly after some great work from the forwards in the red zone. The conversion was missed, but Albion were 5 points up.
Ampthill responded on the 16th minute with a catch & drive try from their hooker Ollie Walliker, also unconverted.
On 26 minutes there was a penalty to Ampthill, with their Fly Half Josh Sharp scoring to claim the 3 points, moments later Albion also benefited from a mistake by Ampthill, earning a penalty which Matt Shepherd stepped up and scored.
As half time approached Ampthill started to apply pressure to Albion and most of the play took place in Albion’s 22. Albion then received their first yellow card of the game for bringing down the maul and then then conceding a penalty try for a deliberate knock on, leaving the score 15-8 to Ampthill.
Albion looked to respond before half time struck and on 41 minutes another penalty try was awarded after Ampthill were penalised for a maul offence, tying the score at 15 a piece.
Following half time and straight from the kick off, an Albion clearing kick on the 22 was charged down by Ampthill’s Will Allman who won the race to touch down the unconverted try.
Then after a period of to and fro in mid-field between the two sides seen Ampthill’s replacement full back, Mikey Waters, finish a backs try on 54 minutes, Sharp adding the extras.
Shortly after, Ampthill touched down between the posts following being set free from the scrum, followed by a conversion by Ampthill’s, Sharp..
Two tries in quick succession on 62 & 66 minutes from Ampthill’s winger, Sam Baker, stretched the lead for the hosts and both tries were converted by Waters.
This was certainly a game of two halves, with second half being one that saw Ampthill wrap up the game and put it out of reach for Albion.
