Albion 31 – Bishops Stortford 17

Report by Rob Kershaw Photography by David Cunningham  Plymouth Albion overcame the stern test of Bishop’s Stortford to pick up their second consecutive victory at home in a 31-17 National League One win. Stortford arrived having won four of their opening 14 league games this season, making for what was expected to be a close encounter. On a bitterly cold, atrociously wet, and miserable day, questions were raised as to whether the game would go ahead. The pitch was damp, with standing water and one of the corners of the pitch was extremely waterlogged. Following a pitch inspection by the...

Albion v Bishops Stortford – 2 PM K/O – Sat 8th January

Plymouth face a pivotal fixture this weekend with the visit of Bishops Stortford to the Brickfields as they start the reverse fixture programme in National League One. The game at the Hertfordshire based club back in September was heart-wrenching for the Albion faithful to say the least. Three second half yellow cards from Albion saw a 3-19 half time lead relinquished, as Bishops scored 29 unanswered points to snatch a 32-19 win! Since then, this weekend’s visitors have had an equally frustrating season and sit just two spots above Albion in the league, having played one game more game. Following...

Taunton 35 – Albion 25

Against a spirited Albion side, Taunton stole the west country bragging rights in the battle of Somerset and Devon this weekend. In a free-scoring game, the men from Veritas Park took an early lead that, barring a purple patch in the second half, never looked like losing. The game kicked off on a cool but clear day and the home side were the first to hit their straps, opting against taking the points for a sequence of catch and drives against the Ocean Cities finest. Manfully, Albion put in a succession of strong defensive sets but it felt like, unless...

Albion 49 – Darlington 22

Match report by Peter Redmond / Photography by David Cunningham Plymouth Albion bounced back from last week’s narrow defeat at Tonbridge with a dominant 49-22 victory over Darlington Mowden Park at Brickfields in National League One. Albion overwhelmed their opposition in an inspired display, scoring seven tries to the Sharks four, to lift themselves out of the bottom two in the table. Head coach Damien Welch was delighted with the performance in front of an appreciative home crowd before a crunch match at home to Leeds Tykes next week. He said: “Everything we discussed during the week as a group,...

Big game for Albion!

Albion v Darlington Mowden Park – Saturday 4th December Plymouth Albion’s topsy turvy season starts a defining run as the midseason approaches with the visit of Darlington Mowden Park this weekend. With a similarly punishing travel schedule, the team from the far Northeast have had an equally tough start to the season with just one win more on the log than the Ocean Cities finest and they will certainly be targeting their visit to the Brickfields. Of note, and perhaps quite ominous for Albion, is the fact DMP have won four of their last six games. Like Albion, this includes...

Chinnor 36 – Albion 41

Albion take all 5 in huge comeback win! After the opening season loss to Rosslyn Park, a dejected head coach Damian Welch commented how the result would do his team good in the long term. Following a match forged on 80 minutes of honest endeavour and grit, it would appear his point was just. In a spectacular advert for the National League Division, Albion and Chinnor exchanged the lead four times with the visitors stealing the most unlikely of victories having been down 36-22 with 6 minutes left to play! The game started well for a slightly altered Albion line-up, after...

Albion 0 – Cambridge 17

Match report by Peter Redmond / Photography by David Cunningham  Plymouth Albion were out-muscled in a bruising encounter with Cambridge RFC which saw them suffer a 17-0 loss at Brickfields in National League One. Having enjoyed a decent run of form coming into this home match Albion gave their all in a tight first half, with the visitors having scored two tries and one conversion by the interval. The second half saw Albi struggle with a bad injury, lost lineouts and a dominated scrum which allowed Cambridge to score once more, shutting Albion out of the game as they dropped into...
